Vlad

Model

The traditional ideas of boyhood and manliness are what define Vlad’s relationship with his son, Timmy. He doesn’t like Timmy’s shy nature, and wants him to be more outgoing and also terrifying. This leads him to be disapproving at times. He has a romanticized vision of youthful troubling making.

Design

I simply went for a very traditional take on a vampire for the face. I started with the look of Christopher Lee’s Dracula, and added a large ear motif to give him the bat-like feel that all Transyltown bat-vampires have. His out fit is modern, but I added a cape to give it both a Victorian and vampire lord kind of flair.

Erze

Model

With Vlad being disapproving I wanted Erze to be a very comforting mother. Her concern for Timmy can lead her to be very over reactive to anything relating to him.

Design

When I originally started this comic I didn’t have a solid fix on her character. I looked at some pictures of Morticia Addams, and Lily Munster, and said, “Okay, stylish, Gothic beauty,” and moved on from there. Once I decided that she would be a constant worrier her design got a lot more emphasized on cuteness, and I felt she started to look more unique. She is currently one of my favorite characters to draw.

Grandpa Ratu

Model

Ratu began as a simple gag from this strip. I later I thought it would be pretty cute to have him be a part of Timmy’s family as is maternal grandfather. I’d like to have him featured in the story proper some time, or at least in a mini strip.

Design

Very obviously inspired by Nosferatu with the Transyltown bat-vampire flair.

Lawrence

Model

I wanted to introduce some hired help at the Tepes manor earlier, but couldn’t initially think of a good sight gag (which ended up being an anemic appearance with bite marks on their necks), so Lawrence and Agatha made their first appearance in this illustration. There’s not much personality to either of them. Lawrence is particularly stoic in demeanor.

Design

Major Armstrong from Full Metal Alchemist and Lurch from The Addams Family are the main influences on his design.

Agatha

Model

She’s meant to be more emotive than Lawrence, but really shes mostly just all smiles in a creepy kind of way.

Design

I mostly had a clear idea of what Agatha’s appearance would be. I had a body and face shape, and a hair type I really wanted to draw, so Agatha ended up with it. Then I threw on a typical maid outfit with a large ribbon for a good silhouette.
